Czechia, popularly known as the Czech Republic, is a country immersed in natural beauty and iconic monumental architecture, such as the St. Vitus Cathedral and the Church of St. Nicholas in Prague. The country’s architectural scene also has its fair share of modernist influences, including Austrian-Czechoslovak architect Adolf Loos, famous for his Villa Müller in Prague. This particular project demonstrated the “Raumplan” or spatial plan, one of the methods he developed to organize interior space, prioritizing function followed by form.

In the late 20th century, being thoroughly influenced by the postmodern Deconstructivist movement, architects Vlado Milunić and Frank Gehry designed the Dancing House, disrupting Prague’s architectural fabric. Since then, Czech architects have completed many extension projects that (sometimes literally) “touch” upon the language of historic buildings. Examples include the Orangery at Prague Castle, a modern greenhouse next to the Royal Palace, designed by Eva Jiřičná, as well as the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague, an adaptive reuse project that has turned a former factory into a dynamic cultural venue, pushing forward Czechia’s urban regeneration practices and architectural innovation.

With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in Czechia based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge.

How are these architecture firms ranked?

The following ranking has been created according to key statistics that demonstrate each firm’s level of architectural excellence. The following metrics have been accumulated to establish each architecture firm’s ranking, in order of priority:

  • The number of A+Awards won (2013 to 2026)
  • The number of A+Awards finalists (2013 to 2026)
  • The number of projects selected as “Project of the Day” (2009 to 2026)
  • The number of projects selected as “Featured Project” (2009 to 2026)
  • The number of projects uploaded to Architizer (2009 to 2026)

Each of these metrics is explained in more detail at the foot of this article. This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of Czechia architecture firms throughout the year.

Without further ado, here are the 35 best architecture firms in Czechia:

Our architectural studio focuses on all forms of architecture, from urbanism to the smallest detail. We create space, atmosphere and a place to live. From the study to the detailed implementation documentation. With an emphasis on maintaining the initial concept at each scale and detail of the construction. We work on various forms of projects. We firmly believe that the variety of work does not stop one from evolving. We tend to approach each project individually and thus do not end up with routine and conventional design. In our work, we place importance on real and well-aging materials, materials that do not break over time. We search for a suitable aesthetic and technical solution depending on quality, functionality over time and price. We work with traditional craftsmanship in conjunction with current technological capabilities.

The studio was founded by Filip Kosek and Jan Říčný in 2015 after previous cooperation during their studies at the Academy of Arts and Architecture in Prague.

1: 1 lab is a platform at the Department of Architectural Design II, Faculty of Architecture, CTU, which deals with design-build projects. Design-build projects are an alternative to standard teaching of architecture; this method allows students not only to design and draw a building, but also to realize it with their own hands. Walter Gropius already had a practical approach to teaching when, in his 1939 statement “Training the Architect”, he stressed that “the young architect of today needs to be trained in the use of tools and materials” rather than being tied to “bloodless drawing board and the phantom of tradition ”.

The architectural workshop, focused mainly on design and build projects and experiments in between architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. In addition to classical architectural practice, we also deal with the design and execution of our own experimental structures, based on constructional and technological simplicity, natural materials and site-specific design.

Our structures are realized as a physical experiment. We often make them with our own hands and on a low budget. Our main ambition is to enrich the specific place and community with architectural work instead of effort to completely change the perception of space and the borders of architecture. One of our goals is to create an open creative group inspired by medieval builder workshops, which will be capable of designing and realizing high-quality architectural works serving the cultivation (not only) of Czech landscape and society.

In our opinion, the key to the correct design is the art of optimally balancing all variables, whether it is the complexity of layouts, selected materials or the detail of processing. In our projects, we emphasize the ideal price-quality ratio. The best contract is a project that we can enjoy together with the client and bring to a successful end.

We look for the authenticity hidden in every task. We always start from scratch, try to avoid the usual architectural clichés and reinvent the core basics in slightly different tones and moods. Our approach is based on interconnecting the physical and metaphysical layers of a project, resonating form and content and engaging sculptural methods with conceptual tendencies. We consider the initiation of projects to be part of our work, reflecting not only architectural but also program, content and social aspects. The spectrum of our designs is wide, from detailed artistic projects, such as memorials and unique museum exhibitions, to individual housing designed to the last detail, to specific projects, such as a church, airport, cruise boat terminal, floating pool, vast administrative buildings, etc.
