If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The reading tool estimates how long it will take to finish a book, based on its word count and your reading speed. You can adjust the speed to see how the time changes.

The median book in this catalog is about 46,000 words, which takes roughly 202 minutes at an average pace. Use the tool to find books that fit your available time.

Length Groups

Books are grouped into short, medium, long, and epic. Short books are under 20,000 words; epic books exceed 120,000 words.

Time Estimates

Each book shows an estimated reading time in minutes, calculated from its word count. The estimate assumes a steady pace without breaks.

Pace Labels

Labels like quick, steady, immersive, and marathon give a quick sense of commitment. Quick reads take under 2 hours, while marathons take over 8.

Reading Tracker Guide

Sustainable Page-Based Progress

The Reading Tracker records your progress in pages, not minutes or sections. You set a current page, a total page count, and a daily page goal. The tracker then calculates your estimated remaining time and finish date. This simple approach works well for most books, especially when you use the library’s default estimate of 250 words per page.

For books without a fixed page count, the tracker estimates the total as ceil(word_count / 250). You can replace that estimate with the page count from your own reading app or edition, making the tracker flexible across formats.

Setting Up a Realistic Plan

Start by choosing a book and noting its word count. For example, That Affair at Elizabeth — A Reader’s Guide has 64,792 words. At 250 words per page, the estimated total is about 259 pages. If you set a daily goal of 20 pages—the default—you would finish in roughly 13 days. That is a manageable pace for most readers.

You can adjust the daily goal to fit your schedule. A lower goal of 10 pages would take about 26 days, while a higher goal of 40 pages would finish in about 7 days. The tracker uses the formula ceil(remaining_pages / daily_page_goal) to estimate finish days, so you can see the impact of your pace immediately.

If your edition has a different page count, you can update the total. This ensures your progress is accurate, especially if the book has wide margins or large type. The tracker is meant to be a flexible tool, not a rigid system.

Tracking Progress and Staying Consistent

Progress is stored in your browser’s localStorage, so you do not need an account. You can update your current page as you read, and the tracker will recalculate your remaining time. This encourages consistent progress without requiring you to track minutes or sections.

The estimated remaining time is proportional: estimated_minutes × remaining_pages / total_pages. So if you are halfway through a book that was estimated at 300 minutes, you have about 150 minutes left. This gives you a rough sense of the time commitment ahead.

Using the tracker with a book like That Affair at Elizabeth can help you build a reading habit. By setting a daily goal and checking your progress, you turn a large task into small, achievable steps. The tracker is a practical companion, not a judge of your reading speed.
